Der englische Formel-1-Traditionsrennstall Williams gehört nun einer US-Investmentgesellschaft. Dorilton Capital mit Sitz in New York kaufte das Privatteam. Williams hat schon seit Jahren erhebliche finanzielle Probleme, die sich zuletzt in der Corona-Krise verschärft hatten.
In Dorilton Capital habe man einen neuen Besitzer gefunden, „der den Sport versteht und weiß, was es braucht, um erfolgreich zu sein“, erklärte am Freitag Co-Teamchefin Claire Williams. Der Investor respektiere zudem „das Vermächtnis des Teams“. Name und Hauptsitz des Teams in Grove sollen bleiben.
„Das ist das Ende einer Ära für Williams als familiengeführtes Team. Aber wir wissen, dass das Team in guten Händen ist“, sagte Claire Williams zur Übernahme, die sich wegen der notwendig gewordenen, strategischen Neuausrichtung seit längerem abgezeichnet hatte.
Der Formel-1-Rennstall Williams wurde 1977 von Teamchef Frank Williams, dem Vater von Claire Williams, sowie Patrick Head gegründet. Insgesamt neun Mal holte das Team den Konstrukteurs-Titel. Den letzte Fahrer-Titel gewann 1997 der Kanadier Jacques Villeneuve. Aktuell fahren George Russell und Nicholas Latifi für Williams.
