Formel-2-Pilot Correa weiter im künstlichen Koma

Zwei Wochen nach dem Unfall in Spa-Francorchamps ist Formel-2-Pilot Juan Manuel Correa weiter im künstlichen Koma.

Wie seine Eltern Juan Carlos und Maria mitteilten, sind Infektionen unter Kontrolle und die Atemwerte weiter stabil. Außerdem seien „alle Vitalwerte“ fortdauernd beständig. Der 20-Jährige mit US- und ecuadorianischem Pass bleibe in einer Londoner Klinik auf der Intensivstation.

Die Ärzte hätten sie daran erinnert, dass solange sich die Entwicklung bei ihrem Sohn selbst nur in kleinen Schritten weiter bessere, „ist das alles, wonach wir im Moment fragen können“, teilten seine Eltern mit. Viele Werte ihres Sohnes hätten sich leicht verbessert, andere hingegen nur geringfügig verschlechtert.

September 13 Juan Carlos and Maria Correa provide additional information on Juan Manuel Correa: “Our son, Juan Manuel, remains in the Intensive Care Unit at a hospital in London, England with my wife and I at his side. We have good days and bad days as well as long nights and short nights but with the support of the motorsports community, our friends, family, country and fans, we continue to pray for Juan Manuel. Juan Manuel remains in a state of induced coma with paralysis in order for his lungs to get as much rest as possible. Continuing to be assisted by an ECMO machine many of the key vital indicators have improved slightly while others have deteriorated very little. We have been reminded by the doctors that as long as Juan Manuel continues in an upward trend of improvement, even if very little, it is all that we can ask for at the moment. Infections are under control and respiratory indicators remain stable and all vital signs continue to remain consistent and stable. We believe in our son’s strength and determination, we see the minor improvement as an indication of him starting to turn the tide in his favor, we just need him to do it a little quicker. Doctors continue to monitor and change the bandages on the lower legs when necessary and confirm that the fractures are multiple and severe. Additional surgeries will be required once Juan Manuel’s lungs improve to a state that it is safe for doctors to proceed. Vor einer Woche waren bei Correa Komplikationen aufgetaucht. Der Formel-2-Pilot war von einem Krankenhaus in Lüttich nach England transportiert worden. Nach der Ankunft in London wurde ein akutes Atemnotsyndrom festgestellt. Es handle sich um eine Verletzung, die angesichts der Schwere des Unfalls vorkomme, schrieben Juan Carlos und Maria Correa damals. Sie habe aber zu einem Atemstillstand geführt.

„Wir glauben an die Stärke und Entschlossenheit unseres Sohnes. Wir sehen den kleinen Fortschritt als ein Anzeichen, dass er beginnt, das Blatt zu seinen Gunsten zu wenden“, teilten seine Eltern nun mit.

Correa hatte sich schwere Beinverletzungen und eine leichte Wirbelverletzung zugezogen, als er in den Wagen des zuvor bereits verunglückten Anthoine Hubert gekracht war. „Zusätzliche Operationen werden notwendig sein, sobald sich der Zustand von Juan Manuels Lungen so weit bessert, dass es für die Ärzte sicher ist, fortzufahren“, hieß es in der jüngsten Mitteilung.

Der Nachwuchspilot des Sauber-Junior-Teams war am 31. August mit hoher Geschwindigkeit in den zuvor bereits verunglückten Wagen Huberts gekracht. Dabei war Correa enormen Kräften ausgesetzt worden. Er war danach umgehend nach Lüttich transportiert und operiert worden. Der Unfallhergang und die Ursachen, die zu dem Crash führten, werden weiter untersucht. Hubert starb noch am Tag des Unfalls mit 22 Jahren.
